Short version: TeamViewer's licence nags and per-seat pricing pushed a lot of people to look elsewhere. RustDesk is the closest drop-in replacement; MeshCentral and Guacamole solve adjacent problems. Stars are from GitHub on 23 October 2026.

The three to know
| Tool | Best for | Licence | Stars |
|---|---|---|---|
| RustDesk | TeamViewer-style remote support | AGPL-3.0 | ~127k |
| MeshCentral | Managing a fleet of machines | Apache-2.0 | ~7.5k |
| Apache Guacamole | Clientless browser access to RDP/VNC/SSH | Apache-2.0 | ~1.7k |
RustDesk: the drop-in replacement
RustDesk describes itself as open-source remote desktop designed for self-hosting, as an alternative to TeamViewer. It works out of the box with public relay servers, but its real advantage is that you can run your own ID and relay server, so connections never pass through a third party. Clients exist for Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS. For IT teams and family tech support alike, it is the obvious first try.
MeshCentral: when you manage many machines
MeshCentral is a complete web-based remote monitoring and management site. Install its agent on each machine and you can control desktops, open terminals and transfer files from a browser. It suits small IT departments and MSPs looking after dozens or hundreds of devices — more of an RMM tool than a one-off support app.
Apache Guacamole: nothing to install on the client
Guacamole is a clientless remote desktop gateway: users open a browser and reach machines over RDP, VNC or SSH, with no client software. It is ideal for giving staff or students access to internal machines through a single secured web portal.
Self-hosting it safely

- Run your own relay for RustDesk instead of public servers.
- Keep it behind a VPN such as WireGuard or Tailscale where you can.
- Turn on two-factor authentication for MeshCentral and Guacamole logins.
- Patch promptly — remote-access tools are prime attack targets.
Remote access is exactly the kind of tool attackers look for, so treat it like infrastructure, not an app. For more self-hosted swaps, see our self-hosted Google Drive guide and n8n alternatives for automation.
