fx (Go) — Terminal JSON viewer & processor
You explore unfamiliar JSON API responses in the terminal and want to navigate rather than guess at jq filters.
CLI & Dev Tools
A terminal JSON viewer you can navigate: fold and expand nodes, search across the structure, and filter with expressions, all interactively. jq is better at transforming JSON in a pipeline; fx is better at the step before that, when you are staring at an unfamiliar API response trying to work out its shape. Go, MIT, single binary, no dependencies. The tradeoff is that it is a viewer first — for scripted transformation in CI you still want jq, and having both installed is the normal answer rather than a compromise. It also loads the document into memory, so very large files are not its use case.

You need scripted transformation in a pipeline, or your files are too large to hold in memory.
