server (C#) — Bitwarden infrastructure/backend (API, database, Docker, etc).
You have a compliance or policy reason your password vault cannot sit on a third party's servers, and you can run reliable backups.
Security & Privacy · Self-Hosted
The server behind Bitwarden, self-hostable so your password vault lives on infrastructure you control. Everything is encrypted client-side, meaning the server never holds your keys — which is what makes both the hosted and self-hosted versions defensible. Clients exist for every platform and browser. C#, source-available under Bitwarden's own licence rather than a standard open-source one, which is worth knowing before you build on it. The honest tradeoff is that self-hosting a password manager makes you responsible for its uptime and its backups, and losing both means losing every credential. Many people who can self-host this still should not. Unless you have a specific reason, the hosted version is the safer choice.
You have a compliance or policy reason your password vault cannot sit on a third party's servers, and you can run reliable backups.
You want self-hosting for its own sake — a vault you cannot restore is worse than a hosted one.
