jellyfin (C#) — The Free Software Media System - Server Backend & API
You have a media library and want it served from your own hardware with no accounts and no paid tiers.
Media & Files · Self-Hosted
A media server for your own library, with clients on TV, phone, browser and console. The distinction from Plex is the one that matters: Jellyfin is GPL-2.0 with no account requirement, no paid tier gating hardware transcoding, and no company able to change the terms later. Everything runs on your hardware and nothing calls home. The tradeoff is polish and effort. Client apps vary in quality across platforms, hardware transcoding needs manual configuration that Plex handles for you, and remote access is your problem to solve. It is a fork of Emby by people who objected to it closing up, and that origin still describes the trade: more freedom, more setup.
You have a media library and want it served from your own hardware with no accounts and no paid tiers.
You want it working in ten minutes with polished apps everywhere — that is what Plex charges for.
