Short version: an MCP server sits between TallyPrime and an AI assistant such as Claude. You ask "which debtors are over 90 days?" in plain English; the server queries Tally's built-in XML gateway and hands the answer back. It is genuinely useful for accountants and finance teams — and genuinely risky if you give an AI write access to live books without a backup.

How it works
TallyPrime has a built-in XML/HTTP gateway. Every Tally MCP server uses it: the server sends XML requests to Tally on your machine and translates the results into tools Claude can call. Nothing is scraped and nothing is uploaded to Tally Solutions — but the data you ask about does go to your AI provider as part of the conversation, which matters for client confidentiality and India's DPDP Act.
Step 1: enable Tally's XML port
In TallyPrime go to F1 → Settings → Connectivity → Client/Server configuration and set the port to 9000, as the most widely used server's README specifies. Keep TallyPrime open while you use the assistant.
The same README warns against the Educational version of TallyPrime: its date-range limits feed partial data to the model, and the answers degrade accordingly.
Step 2: choose a server

| Server | Access | Notes (as of 23 Oct 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| dhananjay1405/tally-mcp-server | Reads Tally data | MIT, 99 stars, active since Apr 2025, one-click Claude Desktop extension |
| MarketingBNG/Tally-MCP | Read-only | MIT, built for audit and analysis, created Aug 2026 |
| Wadhawnaiya/TallyMind | Preview-then-confirm writes | MIT, includes GST tools and connection diagnostics |
| ShrutiSaagar/tally-prime-mcp | Masters, vouchers, reports | MIT, 27 tools, Claude Desktop config |
| gargcamanish-tech/tally-prime-mcp | Read and write | MIT, backs up before every change, created Oct 2026 |
Be clear-eyed: apart from the first, these are young projects with single-digit star counts. That does not make them bad, but it means fewer people have tested them against real books.
Step 3: connect it to Claude
The established server ships a one-click extension for **Claude Desktop**. Its README notes that MCP makes several calls to Tally for validation, so a free Claude plan can hit its limits quickly — a paid plan is more practical for real use. If you work in Claude Code instead, the general setup is in our guide to using MCP in Claude Code.
Step 4: keep your books safe
- Start read-only. Reporting and reconciliation questions need no write access.
- Test on a copy. Point the server at a backup company before your live one.
- Back up before any write. Prefer servers that preview or stage changes for approval.
- Mind client data. Get consent before sending a client's ledger to an AI provider.
The same discipline applies to any MCP server with access to money — see our MCP server security checklist. For another India-specific finance server, read our Zerodha Kite MCP guide.
